ARBITRATION, MEDIATION & PARENTING COORDINATION

The general rate for arbitration, mediation and parenting coordination services with John-Paul Boyd Arbitration Chambers is $425 per hour, plus applicable federal and provincial taxes, for all work performed by John-Paul Boyd including meetings, hearings, telephone calls, videoconferences, correspondence, drafting and review of documents.

In most circumstances, clients are also responsible for all reasonable and necessary expenses incurred by John-Paul Boyd Arbitration Chambers in connection with the mediation, arbitration or parenting coordination services provided, including experts’ fees, hotel accommodation where meetings and hearings are located elsewhere than Calgary, boardroom booking fees, equipment rentals and photocopying when commercial printing services are used. Clients are not responsible for John-Paul’s travel costs other than hotel accommodation; we do not charge for travel time and do not require clients to pay for expenses such as airfare and mileage.

Please note that writing arbitral awards is notoriously time-consuming when done well. As a general rule, clients should expect that each half-day spent at an arbitration hearing will require one full day of writing time afterward.

INDEPENDENT LEGAL ADVICE SERVICES

The general rate for independent legal advice services provided by John-Paul Boyd Arbitration Chambers is $400 per hour, plus applicable federal and provincial taxes, for all work performed by John-Paul, including meetings, telephone calls, videoconferences, correspondence and document review.

Note that practice standards vary between Alberta and British Columbia. In British Columbia, independent legal advice on family law agreements, including cohabitation, marriage and separation agreements, will generally require one to three hours of John-Paul’s time. In Alberta, independent legal advice on family law agreements involves a full review of financial and other information, and will generally require three to eight hours of John-Paul’s time.

Independent legal advice on participation agreements, which are usually required for arbitration, mediation, collaborative negotiation and parenting coordination, will generally require one hour or less of John-Paul’s time.

CHILDREN’S LEGAL SERVICES

The general rate for preparing views of the child reports, drafting children’s affidavits and providing legal advice to children, where the services relate to proceedings in the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench or the British Columbia Supreme Court, is $425 per hour. In most circumstances, clients are also responsible for all reasonable and necessary expenses incurred by John-Paul Boyd Arbitration Chambers to interview children, including hotel accommodation where overnight travel outside of Calgary is required, boardroom booking fees, equipment rentals and photocopying when commercial printing services are used. Clients are not responsible for John-Paul’s travel costs other than hotel accommodation; we do not charge for travel time and do not require clients to pay for expenses such as airfare and mileage.

For children’s legal services relating to mediation or to litigation proceedings in the Alberta Provincial Court or the British Columbia Provincial Court, the general rate is $225 per hour, plus all reasonable and necessary expenses incurred by John-Paul Boyd Arbitration Chambers to interview children.
